Hi, I am Ümit.
I am a PhD candidate in Learning Sciences at Northwestern University. I study people’s intuitive ways of thinking about everyday complex systems because I want to find better ways to teach about (and teach with) cross-cutting concepts such as emergence, stochasticity, feedback loops, non-linearity, and chaos. When I am not obsessing over my dissertation, I design novice-friendly programming environments for science education, create resources to learn about agent-based modeling with NetLogo, develop agent-based models of evolutionary phenomena, and tinker with computational approaches to qualitative research using modern techniques such as network analysis, natural language processing, and machine learning.
